The Berkey line of water filters is one of the most trusted and time-tested water filtration systems. The simplicity and transportability of this system makes it ideal for everyday use or emergency situations. The best source for additional information is: http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/berkey_light_big_berkey_water_filter_british_berkefeld_portable_purifier.aspx ***DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR BERKEY FROM THIS PLACE, JUST GET INFO. SEE BELOW

The Berkey systems are basically divided into two types, the plastic and the stainless steel. Without a doubt, we would recommend the stainless steel for its durability, as the plastic Berkey may have a tendancy to fall over if it is getting empty. The stainless versions come in five sizes. For large families or for those who need large amounts of water, it is recommended to get either of the two largest sizes. The Imperial Berkey is the second to largest and is the most ideal size when weighing the benefits of cost, capacity, and actual size. After a disaster, you may need to depend on your Berkey for all your water needs. You can filter pond water with this system. MAKE SURE you get the black filters as the black filters filter out the HIGHEST percentage of microorganisms.

Berkey also manufactures shower filters and additional fluoride filters. BEWARE; there are look-a-likes and fakes on many websites including E-bay. Be sure that you are receiving a genuine product.
The pleasanthillgrain.com site is a reliable source for information, but our recommendation for purchase is to contact a Berkey representative that we have made many orders through. The number is (435) 835-8283

*** Web sites will tell you they will give you a free water bottle(s) and shipping. But when you compare this persons prices (even with a water bottle and shipping) this person with give you the most significant savings overall. I have checked every avenue for purchasing Berkeys. For example this person sells Imperial Berkeys and multiple filters for $100 LESS than anyone else.

I have a dear friend who is considering having a water well dug, to meet the number one need of his family during a crisis situation… drinkable water. Supplying the water need is crucial, but a well can be quite expensive. First there is the drilling of the well, including installing the well casing. This could cost $2000.00- $4000.00, depending on your area, for a well depth of 100 feet or less. Can the driller get his rig onto your property to the spot where you want the well? And do your city or county laws permit such a well under their jurisdiction…a big deal, to say the least. Assuming your local law permits it, after the well is dug, the pump itself needs to be purchased and installed. This may run $500.00-$1000.00 or more, even for a big hand pump. The little pitcher pump you have in mind can only lift water about 25 feet, sooo…plan for something larger.

A drastically cheaper but not quite as good an option is to purchase 3 or 4 of the big plastic 55
gallon barrels and store water in them. They cost about $60.00 eachand can be purchased at an industrial supply company. They are about 3/8th of an inch thick, tough and can be stored outside or in your garage, etc. You will need a small pump to extract your water. This is not an endless supply, but 200 gals. of good water is a good shock absorber while services, hopefully, are being quickly restored. You can also modify these drums to catch water from your gutter system on your house…this will need to be purified for drinking, but is great for flushing toilets.

Either way or another way, I commend my friend for planning to have water for his family!

Like blasts from a double barreled shotgun, two back to back blizzards at the beginning of 2007 in Colorado and Kansas stranded motorists and livestock killing a number of folks and thousands of cattle. Among the problems in the aftermath of the storms was dwindling water supplies. Emergency management officials voiced concern for a real water cricis for some… Water is the absolutely most fundamental need and the top priority for physical preparation.

A dear friend of mine had NO water laid up prior to hurricane Ivan which struck the Gulf Coast in 2004…not one gallon. His reasoning: ‘I have a generator (a good thing!) and it is hooked up to my pump. I just crank the generator, flip a switch, and presto…water!’ Problem: The storm mangled his power lines, making the whole set up unworkable and leaving him with NO WATER!

How about you? Do you have a supply of water in your home and car that is independent of the water system? Most of us could go weeks without eating, but “no water” is another story. More to come in the days ahead.
