A manual hand grain mill is an integral part of your food storage. It is very important for times when power is lost, be it a weather event or global crisis. Grinding wheat and beans and even the ability to make nut butters is all possible with a hand mill. I want to talk about two of the highest rated hand grain mills. The first is the Country Living Mill (CLM) which costs $400. Occasionally, you can purchase a slightly cosmetically blemished mill from the manufacturer for $350. The CLM is the highest rated mill on the market and is known for its durability and quick milling speed and it offers options such as the “Power Bar” which help ease the task of milling. The second was the Wonder Mill Jr. (WMJ) which costs $170. The WMJ is a produced by reputable company and is considered a quality economical mill designed more for occasional emergency use.

I recently had the opportunity to test the CLM and WMJ side by side, to compare the milling speeds and consistency of flour. The CLM produced a little over one cup of flour per minute compared to the WMJ which took twice as long. But even at two minutes per cup, when compared to the price, the WMJ is still outstanding. This test was performed with each mill producing fine flour with a powder consistency. If more course flour is acceptable, the milling times will be reduced.

Another point to consider when choosing a mill is whether you intend to use it for nut butters. The CLM does not currently have the nut butter capability, but representatives from the company said they are in the process of creating a mechanism for nut butters. The WMJ on the other hand has the capability of nut butters with the purchase additional burr (bringing the cost to $220) . During my test, I produced two to three tablespoons of nut butter in about five minutes. This would be a real chore to get a jar of butter complete, but it would be possible. **

Each mill is also capable of producing ground popcorn for corn meal and beans for soups or breads.

To summarize, either mill would be a fine addition to any pantry for people who intend to process whole foods at home. And there are many types of mills on the market, but the CLM and WMJ are both constructed of a strong cast metal as opposed to other mills, which rely on plastic parts. Also, inferior mills may have slower milling speeds, require more work and may not even produce fine flour without re-milling the flour. Below are some links to the manufactures websites to view the mills and/or purchase them. As with anything, do your research, call the companies and find the best bargain that the internet has to offer.

**And as a side note, I was also informed that the WMJ is set to release an updated and improved version of their popular mill at the end of 2010.

Because of the urgency of the hour in which we live, and the many admonitions we all have received to prepare for dark times ahead, we have felt urged to do something about it – not only spiritually, but practically. There are those amongst you who know good cheap places to purchase certain necessary items for survival (food, clothing, equipment, safety measures etc.) and you need to share these ideas with others in your family or circle of friends. Perhaps you could even do bulk purchases which you can exchange with others. These ideas should be openly discussed with your loved ones BEFORE you WISH you had paid attention! None of us desires to see the time when we might have to put these preparations into action, but when we think of how Joseph in the Bible reacted to the coming famine with such wisdom, it behooves us to follow suit. It must be pointed out, that there may be a situation arise that would make it impossible to do ANY of these things listed below. At which time we will of necessity throw ourselves upon the mercy of our loving Heavenly Father, Who will provide miracles of supernatural provision and protection! With this in mind, we have prepared the following notes which we pray will be most helpful to you. At the very end of this document, we also comment briefly on spiritual, mental, and emotional preparations. May the Lord Adonai be very near and dear to us during these perilous times, and may we truly be ready to meet the Messiah when He returns!!
What most survivalists don’t know, is that DE has numerous other survival applications, from a water filtration to use as an insecticide to an anti-parasitic. If you really want to be prepared for the coming financial disaster, do yourself a favor and check out some of the relatively little-known survival applications for diatomaceous earth. What diatomaceous earth really is: DE is made from fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. There are numerous commercial and industrial uses, but you will also find food grade diatomaceous earth that is safe – and even beneficial – for human digestion. Food storage: Simply sprinkle a bit of earth on each two or three inch layer of grain as you fill your bucket/container. Once the container is full, roll it around on the floor (or shake it if you have a strong back) to spread the earth around. It is excellent for killing tiny hatchlings in your grain and is safe, tasteless, and even beneficial when ingested by humans (as long as you aren’t guzzling it). Don’t bother washing it off before preparing the grain it was used on. In the worst case scenario, it will kill off some of the parasites in your body. Water filtration: Some of you have studied up on expedient filtration systems, and if you have, you will find diatomaceous earth an excellent medium for water filtration. In fact, you will find it used in most swimming pool filters, as it is excellent for straining microscopic particles out of your water. (You’ll have to do your own research into how to make your own filter). It can also be used to filter wine or beer. Just remember that food grade diatomaceous earth can be used to filter water, but the stuff packaged for using in your pool should NOT be used for storing grains. Natural insecticide: Diatomaceous earth kills most insects by absorbing the lipids (fats) from the outside of their exoskeletons, causing them to quickly dehydrate. Just sprinkle a bit around your foundation to keep out the creepy crawlies, or apply it in problem areas (garden, under the sink, your kid’s head, etc.). Its especially useful in dealing with cockroaches, slugs, snails aphids, thrips, earwigs, silverfish, ants, bedbugs, cabbage root flies, carrot root flies, fleas, pillbugs, and ticks. Don’t worry, because “d” earth doesn’t do the same damage to humans, who have much, much more liquid in their bodies to cope with the absorption. Anti-parasitic: Earth can be mixed with food in small amounts to kill worms or even parasites in humans or animals; and can also be added to the coat of dogs or cats (or the head of your child) to kill fleas, ticks, or lice. In fact, some vendors even package it specifically for this purpose, and it has been used throughout modern history by veterinarians in medical grade form to accomplish the same purpose. Some ranchers even add it to livestock feed to help produce healthier, parasite-free livestock. Abrasive: Diatomaceous earth is mildly abrasive, and can be added to homemade toothpastes or soaps to aid in cleansing teeth, dishes, or other surfaces. Liquid absorber: It is also unduly useful as an alternative to cat litter or to clean up spills – and is even recommended by the Center for Disease Control to clean up toxic liquids. There are however a couple of considerations you should keep in mind when working with diatomaceous earth. Because it absorbs liquids, it can be mildly irritating if you end up breathing in a lot of its dust. Use a mask if you plan on being messy. Also, diatomaceous earth will often kill “good” insects like bees and ladybugs, so use it conscientiously. Lastly, not all diatomaceous earth is considered food grade, so please don’t go buying just any earth and dumping it in your food. http://www.survival360.net/BlogArchives/DiatomaceousEarth.html ONLY BUY FOOD-GRADE DE – Either Perma-Guard (USA) or Red Lake Earth (Kamloops, BC) NEVER EVER BUY Diatomaceous Earth meant for insecticides or swimming pool filters.

All through the Bible, the Creator of Heaven and Earth has provided for His people. At the time of the Creation of man, the Creator had a garden with water, living trees, and living herbs, which were to be used for food. Later, He even provided meat to eat. Abraham’s wife, Hagar, and mother of Ishmael, was dying in the desert, yet the Lord provided water. Elijah was fed by the ravens. David and his men ate the show bread. During the 40 years in the wilderness, the children of Israel drank water from the rocks, ate manna and quail, and even their clothes and shoes did not wear out in forty years! Jonah survived in the belly of a whale! We are all born for such a time as this. I believe we are here on earth at the right time, and whatever disasters are coming, (and they are coming) the Lord will provide for His people. I think of the countries where the water is so polluted we would not survive for a day, yet the locals live on garbage dumps, toxic waste, and highly polluted water. By the grace of God, and according to His will, they survive, and even bear children who live the same life style. It is amazing! It is man’s greed that has destroyed so much of our Lord’s air, water, food, and soil, as He provided enough for everyone. I also believe it is the same greed that has caused so many illnesses, poverty, and will bring disasters or plagues. It is also a miracle to think of a tiny egg, that has everything to grow into a baby an adult, or an acorn or a mustard seed that has all it needs to grow into a huge tree. I give thanks and marvel at the Lord’s blessings and His Creations. He is the Living Bread and the Living Water. As I look out my window, and walk around my small organic farm, I am deeply grateful to the Creator. I marvel as the birds of the air, squirrels, rabbits, deer, mice, rats, frogs, worms, and insects, all are provided for. Lord forgive me when I even complain as some of them feast on the luscious fruit and vegetables I have worked so hard to grow. It is YOUR LAND, LORD and it is YOUR FOOD and you say in Your Word you will feed your creations. The birds and squirrels always know when the nuts are perfect to eat and store. Of course, the bird pick the biggest and best cherries, berries, grapes, and the wasps are pros at the best apples on the trees. I learned to be grateful for what is left for my family and me. As challenging as it is to grow organically and harvest here in BC, it is also so rewarding. I believe, that in the future, the true gold will be the Lord’s “SEEDS” that are not hybrids, but His living foods and herbs! What is missing in the average diet is the lack of enzymes, minerals, and the use of greens. And yet as you look around, the Lord makes this area so green with His Living Food. In the spring comes the abundance of LIVING HERBS, filled with nutrients and natural chlorophyll – all from the Lord. The very hardy weed, the dandelion, can be harvested. The early spring leaves can be eaten in salads, or made into green drinks. The beautiful yellow blossoms the children and I have gathered and made into delicious syrup. Some people even make wine from the dandelions. The root is dried and used for cleansing the blood and the liver. There is chickweed, lambs quarter, sorrel, plantain, stinging nettles – all so nourishing – and can be used for teas, salads, or soups. The high mineral count in the red and white clover is good for cleansing the blood and for healing. White clover helps the nerves. Feverfew grows like weeds, and is used for headaches. Chamomile is good for a nervous stomach. The wild mullein is good for swelling and skin conditions, the precious pods filled with oil that can be used also for the skin, and as an oil for the ears. Calendula is a popular garden flower, and is made into an amazing healing cream. The burdock root cleanses and heals the liver. The huge hawthorn trees, with beautiful red berries, are so good for the heart and the circulation. (Unfortunately, my tree is too close to the road, so I have transplanted some to the back of the property.) Juniper berries can be used with caution as a diuretic, or for the urinary antiseptic. Anyone can grow the common herbs in pots in a window box, or a porch – eg. parsley, oregano, basil, chives, rosemary, lavender, thyme, sage, marjoram, catnip, lemon balm, and peppermint.Try some nasturtium flowers in a salad, or use the seeds for a peppery taste. In my yard I also have sage, lemon balm, lavender, loveage, wormwood, comfrey, garlic, oregano, peppermint, and winter rosemary, These herbs can all be used fresh or dried – for cooking, teas, and medicine. (keep scrolling down…)
There is also Oregon Grape, and rose hips loaded with Vitamin C. There are so many herbs, barks, flowers, that can be used as food and for medicine. The Lord God knows them all – He created them for our use and benefit. Our God is an awesome God and greatly to be praised.

Terrorists may shadow an intended victim at length and with infinite patience before an actual abduction or assassination is attempted. Initial surveillance efforts may be clumsy and could be spotted by an alert target. In most cases, more than one individual is a likely candidate for the terrorist act. Usually the choice is based on the probability of success. In one documented instance, both an American and another country’s representative were under surveillance. Though the American was the first choice of the terrorists, their surveillance showed that it would be more difficult to kidnap him. Consequently, the other individual was abducted and spent a long period in captivity. Precise risks of surveillance and popular local tactics can be explained by your company’s security representative.

However, you must also learn to cultivate a “sixth sense” about your surroundings. Know what is normal in your neighborhood and along your commute routes, especially at choke points. If you know what is ordinary, you will notice anything extraordinary—people who are in the wrong place or dressed inappropriately, or cars parked in strange locations. Be particularly observant whenever you leave your home or office. Look up and down the street for suspicious vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, etc. Note people near your home who appear to be repair personnel, utility crew teams, even peddlers. Ask yourself if they appear genuine. Become familiar with vehicle makes and models; learn to memorize license numbers. Determine if a pattern is developing with specific vehicles. See if cars suddenly pull out of parking places or side streets when you pass. Cars with extra mirrors or large mirrors are suspicious. Be aware of the types of surveillance: stationary (at residence, along route, at work); following (on foot, by car); monitoring (of telephone, mail); searching (of luggage, personal effects, even trash); and eavesdropping (electronic and personal). An elaborate system involving several people and cars might be used. Make their job tougher by not being predictable. Eat at different times and places. Stagger professional and social activities; do not play tennis “every Wednesday at three,” for example. Know the choke points on your routes and be aware of other vehicles, vans, or motorcycles as you enter those bottleneck areas. Search out safe havens that you can pull into along the route. Drive with windows rolled up to within 2 inches of the top and lock all doors. Report any suspicious activity promptly to law enforcement. Avoid using unlicensed cabs or cabs that appear out of nowhere. Do not permit taxi drivers to deviate from desired route. Be circumspect with members of the press, as terrorists often pose as journalists. Do not submit to interviews or allow photographs to be made in or of your home. Always speak guardedly and caution children to do the same.

Never discuss travel or business plans within hearing of servants. Surveillants consider children and servants to be a prime source of information. Always assume that your telephone is tapped. In elevators, watch for anyone who waits for you to select your floor, then pushes a button for the one just above or below yours. If you become aware of surveillance, do not let those watching you know you are onto them. And certainly never confront them. Immediately notify your appropriate company representative. Memorize emergency numbers, and carry change for phone calls. ————————————————————————————————————————

Some time ago I got hold of a plan to systematically acquire emergency necessities. It was called the “Mormon 52 week Plan.” I asked a friend who has “tried it” if it worked for her…here is her response,” Yes. First – where to even begin storing…then classifying types of stuff , then how much of what, i.e. 0ne roll of toilet paper per person per week. Even if I wasn’t storing -this is a good system for shopping in bulk. I feel much more in charge and not as much of a victim of the whims of the marketplace. Now, I can look at a sale and know if that is a good price, and how much I should buy, or not.
Organizing Your Stored Items, Part I – Justine

Several months ago, I began storing items, using the Mormon 52 Week List as my basic information guide.

(I liked its orderliness and unwieldy plan, because I did not know where to even begin such a huge task.)

It did not take me long to recognize 2 basic problems:

1. It looked like I would need a barn to store all the “stuff” in.

2. I needed a workable, simple PLAN to find what I had stored!!!!!!!

The barn was just not doable…so I had to work out an alternative.

This is the point where every person with whom I have ever discussed storing has said…”Oh, I could not do that…I don’t have enough room.” It DOES take a different mindset, but you do have lots more room in your house than you think or need.

PLEASE think through how you are going to do this before you start, and you will not be overwhelmed by week after week of storing items coming in to the house with your regular groceries. If you don’t plan, I guarantee you will just begin to put them with your regular pantry items and within a month will be looking for help…so will start putting stuff anywhere it will fit and, yikes, what do you have and where is it will be your lament! I just found my peaches and pears this week behind my gift wrap!

Here is what I did for increasing my household storing space – for stored items I would really care if varmints of any size got at or into:

I measured all of my closets and found on both ends on the floor that I had dead space that would just perfectly accommodate a 4 shelf bookcase…found at Target for around $20. each -sturdy, painted wire. This was basic. Note, I am not advertising for Target…but if you watch they will have these units on sale several times a year – esp. around “off to clg” time for the small ones…then within 2-3 weeks will have the large ones on sale.

Second Note, this dead space may be hard to get to – so, for mine, I bought 3 baskets packs with green handles at WalMart for $6. and filled them with items that fell off the shelves or couldn’t be easily reached…the baskets were just right.

Then I noticed that my AC/heater closet would hold a 6 foot high shelving unit – bought a plastic one which I could install IN the closet (Lowe’s, Home Depot, Target) – BUT soon found out it needed dowels in the middle of each shelf for bracing against the weight of each shelf’s contents – canned goods.

I looked at the contents of my closet shelves and decided to store more bedding and unused “stuff” in our unheated/unair-conditioned attic. This is not stuff that will be harmed by that environment – used roach stuff and cedar to fend off varmints…used covered plastic containers with clips on the ends to keep them from slipping open.

I looked under the beds and found lots of space there for things not able to go into the attic, but not needed in the closets. I use covered containers there.

All of my closets could accommodate one more shelf at the top. None of what I stored used all the space to the ceiling…so, most home building supply stores have that type of shelving – use the same spacing for the clips as the shelves below it and you should hit the same wood as the other shelves for your screws.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

AND,finally, I bought a large, heavy duty, metal shelving unit for our shed…about $80.at Target, on sale. There are a lot of things I can store there, such as detergent, fabric softener, dish detergent, cleaning supplies, and more.

Next part, I will explain my plan for knowing what items you bought, where it is stored, how many you bought and what each item’s expiration date is.

Happy planning!

Organizing Your Stored Items – Part 2- Justine

I began to purchase items using the Mormon 52 Week List…BUT, because I was compressing time and purchasing all over the List things got crazy quickly – where did I put the last items like these, have I purchased many of these items yet, where should I put these new purchases?

First, I stored in my existing pantry, then stacked stuff on the floor, anywhere I had floor space, FINALLY I bought shelving for the closets…please see Part 1.

Once the closets and other storage places were in place, I used 3×5 cards for items and amounts and location- those cards became another nightmare - cards lost, misfiled, dropped while using…thus evolved THE BOOK!

I had a hard-bound, 5×8″, ”CASH” book which is set up as a ledger – perfect for my needs.

This book is a HUGE blessing, especially since I would rather use my memory for other things, and because other members of the family can use the book and find stored items without needing me.

I counted off 2 pages for each division(actually 4 sides)…first cover page to be a Master List of Locations, then each letter of the alphabet. (Use 3 pages for B,C, M and T – more later).

My Master List of Locations looks like this: ( what’s really located there examples in parenthesis - my partial list)

AT Attic (toilet paper, paper towels, bedding, off season clothes, decorations)

AC AC Closet (canned everything – meats, popcorn, veggies, beef stew, tins -chicken, corned bf)

CC C’s Closet (all med related items, coffee, salt, sugar, toiletries)

JC J’s Closet (cnd milk, dry milk, coffee mate, ziploc bags, all food wraps)

JBC J’s Bath Closet

JUB J-Under Bed (odd bath items – ace bandages, travel items, precious hand work, guest sheets)

OC Office Closet (lard, cnd pet meat, batteries, hand soap, candles)

S Shed (laundry and dish detergent, fabric softener, bleach, fabric aids, pest sprays, etc)

USK Under Sink-Kitchen

OS Over Stove (salt, unopened spices)

P Pantry (along with regular foodstuffs – beans, pasta, oddball condiments, puddings)

Use a pen or pencil for entries – BUT – use a pencil for amounts/numbers - you will add to and remove items over time. RULE FOR EVERYONE - CORRECT THE BOOK IF YOU REMOVE AN ITEM FROM STORAGE- and add it to the grocery list for replenishing.

Enter items alphabetically using the most important word to identify the item ..i.e., on the B page I entered “OC(location) – Batteries – with a separate line for each size and use a column for the number purchased/stored…the date of expiration. Ex. B page. Batteries item – C size - pkgs of 8 amount – 6 pkgs - 2016 exp date.

Date of expiration is a MUST – you will be crushed to find cans that have swollen that you should have used – very wasteful, too. When purchasing, watch for the longest exp dates – some will be short by pkging method -ex. coffee – cans store longer, so are best. Date spice using a magic marker on the bottom of spice container- when you first open it.

Where you actually store items is up to you. The above master list is a sample, and incomplete.

I store my most often used items closest to the kitchen – canned goods – I use them and replenish them frequently.

I also, found the over-the-door shoe bags(clear, if possible – WalMart) perfect for the ones or 2′s odd ball items, like steak sauces, conc. lemon juice, tapioca, mustard, etc. It fits on the back of my pantry door, and bathroom closet and doors.

The reason I told you to leave extra pages for B,C,M,T is because I grouped items that take up a lot of space, i.e. Toiletries on the T page, Bean types on the B page, Condiments on the C page, and Meds & Related items on the M page(with a note on T and M pages to cross-check for an item).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

I do watch for sales…I do use coupons… and I initially bought 3 or 4x my normal purchase. This is expensive to start, because I did not want to wait 52 weeks to do the whole sequence…but now that I have a good grasp of the process, I can add or plug in to the list as the market allows. I do try to at least buy double items like over the counter meds…esp with coupons when they are on sale!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

I have a small garden. Have bought seeds in advance of the season at my local feed and farm supply store. I plan to do even more intense gardening this season…and hope to can veggies and relishes(for gifting). I don’t have freezer space and am suspicious of energy supplies in the future.

Do add your suggestions to this info – and do ask questions. Be blessed. J

The following information is from our journey in the world of preparation and food storage. We have a lot to learn and there are countless resources on the web to help someone who desires to prepare. Even elsewhere on this website, there is great information that may be more specific than where our current journey has taking us. I encourage you to read what we have learned, then dive in and let God lead you down the path He has for you.

First and foremost, get God out of your “box”. Start learning how to ask Him for exactly what you need for your life and especially how He would have you to prepare. This is the most important step in preparation. When hard times, by any definition, come upon us, everyone will be desperate for his REAL help and guidance for our lives and provision for our families. Learning how to stop and listen for His voice is a good start. God wants to be intimately involved in the small things as well as the big things. With God there is total peace because He really is the one in control. So let Him tell you what to do. He will specifically prompt you and open doors that will continually amaze you.

The following is an extremely simplistic way of approaching food storage:The four H’s of Food Storage:

Health: Health is the ultimate goal.

Heat: Heat is required for food preparation.

H20: Water is essential.

Hope: Have no fear. God is in control.

The Game Plan
Start with a plan, even if it changes. Try to avoid just packing away meaningless stuff. Two ideas that should always prevail are variety and quantity. Without a variety of foods, you may be living on a meal plan that has only a few choices. Think about what it takes to prepare a simple meal, or what ingredients are in your best “food storage” bread recipe. (Try a book called Cooking with Home Storage by Viki Tate) Stock up on everything you will need. Then focus on quantity. Begin to proportionally increase your storage, based on the variety you have chosen. The Latter Day Saints have a website that calculates what they believe is necessary. It is useful, but is also an eye-opener: http://lds.about.com/library/bl/faq/blcalculator.htm.You may also want to pick a scenario you will prepare for. For example, begin with storage for a week, with intermittent electricity at your disposal. From that point you could potentially increase to living indefinitely on your own “off the grid”. For most, it would be physically and financially impossible to achieve complete sustainability, but then again, don’t place limits on God’s wisdom and His love for you.We have found that Sam’s is the easiest place to purchase items in bulk.

Part of my personal burden for you is for you and your families and friends have some reserves of essential supplies, especially food and water, so that when the crunches come you will not be”out there” with the panicked crowds, scrambling and grabbing for some disparately needed something to keep you going until things settle down…for a while. Old friends of mine were in the Minneapolis area during the race riots of the 60′s. The location where they lived was barricaded/ cordoned off. The mad scene at the grocery stores inside this perimeter, with people emptying shelves passionately and rudely, burns in their memories. It can happen again, and suddenly. Recently Glenn Beck said ‘Last week the U.S. agricultural secretary said, and I quote, “We have never been less secure about the near-term future of wheat. The threat here at home is real, and it is urgent.” http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/glenn.beck/ Follow that with Sam’s club on April 23rd restricting the number of large bags of rice that a person could buy in their stores. Is this really significant? Deeply so, in my view. If food supplies are temporarily cut off, due to some escalation of what some call the “Global Food Crisis,” are you ready to handle it or will you be out there with the impassioned crowd? If you are serious, you can finds some great books on Food Storage and Emergency Preparedness at Amazon.com. I will post some interesting stuff soon…but what will it takes to get you serious about food storage (insurance!)?
